Navigating Your Relationship with your Adult Gifted/2e Child

Being the parent or caregiver of gifted and twice-exceptional children doesn’t suddenly become simple when they become adults. How do you stay connected, communicate well, respect independence, and support a gifted or 2e adult child on the bumpy road of adulthood without overstepping? Join us for shared stories, collective wisdom, and compassionate conversation.

Gifted kids are often bewildering– this doesn’t change when they grow up. In this informal, six-session online conversation series, parents and caregivers gather with others who are also exploring territory parenting books don’t cover. All sessions are guided by experienced facilitators, but the heart of the group is the parents and caregivers themselves. You’ll have space to ask questions, share experiences, and listen to each other. After each session, participants receive a summary of key insights along with access to a shared folder of practical resources that grows throughout the series.

Carol Malueg, M.A., GCT, 2e, is a learning coach and consultant, specializing in gifted and twice-exceptional education and support. Carol serves on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (MCGT) and the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum (GHF). She was honored with the MCGT Friend of the Gifted Award in 2020. Carol has trained hundreds of Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Model Parent Group Facilitators worldwide and was awarded the SENG Presidential Award for Distinguished Service in 2021. She has worked on three Javits Grant research projects focused on improving identification of and services for gifted at-risk students. Joan Larson is a gifted education specialist with Minnetonka Public Schools in Minnesota. She was an elementary classroom teacher for ten years, and has been a gifted education specialist for thirty years. Joan earned her Master’s Degree in Gifted, Creative, and Talented education from the University of St. Thomas. She has worked full-time work with gifted and talented students and their families in a variety of capacities, including program and curriculum development, coaching fellow teachers, and helping families navigate school with their gifted children. She has trained hundreds of SENG Model Parent Group Facilitators and led SMPGs with participants from all over the world.

Please join us for a presentation and Q&A featuring Ned Johnson, co-author of the national bestseller The Self-Driven Child.

The relentless stream of advice, the constant comparisons, and the pressure to raise children who excel in every area: it’s no wonder that so many parents—and the kids they raise—feel overwhelmed. For gifted children especially, their focus on academic and extracurricular outcomes can hinder self-drive and lead to anxiety and burnout.

As an expert who has spent decades helping children and families develop resilience and confidence, he will speak to us about how to impart in kids a healthy sense of control over their own lives and nurture intrinsic motivation and well-being.

In addition, the national conversation about kids and technology has particular significance for gifted children. Offering recent research and real-life examples, Ned will advise families on how to promote the healthy use of technology (and mitigate the negative impacts of constant digital exposure) while still maintaining family harmony and connection.

Ned’s work is founded on brain science and years of teaching and coaching experience. In his presentation, he will share practical strategies for the parenting questions we all have:

How can I be a steady, non-anxious presence in my child’s life?

What language can I use to encourage independence, self-resilience, intrinsic motivation and joy?

How can we work together to navigate the inevitable hurdles of school, technology, and growing up in a high-pressure world?

ABOUT NED JOHNSON

Together with Dr. William Stixrud, Ned Johnson is the co-author of three books: The Self-Driven Child, What Do You Say? and their workbook The Seven Principles of Raising a Self-Driven Child (Penguin Press, March 2025.) The Self-Driven Child was a national bestseller, sold one million copies and is published in 19 languages.

Ned is also the president and founder of PrepMatters, a nationally renowned education company that helps students succeed in high school and get into college. He describes himself as a professional “tutor-geek” who since 1993 has spent more than 50,000 one-on-one hours helping students.

Ned loves how kids think and is forever curious about what motivates them, what worries them, and what matters to them. His mission is to help students learn about their own learning, thinking, and effective ways to motivate themselves, handle stress, and perform at their best. He encourages students to find a healthy balance between what life asks of them and what they want out of their own lives.

He is a proud board member of CollegeTracks, which helps first-generation-to college students from low-income and immigrant households bridge systemic opportunity gaps to get to and through post-secondary education and on to a career pathway, and of the Safe Community Coalition, which provides programs and resources to reduce stress, foster mental wellness, and empower youth to thrive and make responsible choices about their health and safety.

Financial assistance is available from the Betty Johnson Scholarship Fund: Minnesota families with gifted and talented children should not be restricted in their participation in MCGT activities because of limited funds. MCGT also accepts requests for financial assistance for MCGT membership fees.

Supporting the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented learners is essential to helping them thrive in school and beyond. This four‑part professional learning series sponsored by MDE and the Minnesota Council for Gifted and Talented provides educators, school leaders, psychologists, and counselors with practical strategies and research-based insights on key topics affecting gifted students today: anxiety, productive struggle, co‑regulation, and the intersectional identities of twice‑exceptional learners.

Each session features a nationally recognized expert—Teresa Boatman, Mark Long, Claire Hughes, and Matthew Fugate—who will guide participants in understanding these challenges and applying effective approaches in classrooms, counseling settings, and schoolwide practices.

All sessions will be recorded and available following the presentation. CEUs will be provided. The fee for the series is $100.

Using an abbreviated version of human-centered design’s “crash course”, this session will immerse you into the struggle with your learner and writing. Gifted learners have a complex relationship with learning to write and writing. Together we will quiet the noise and identify the first steps to supporting you and/or your learning in improving their relationship with writing. You will leave the session with a new perspective, a lot of knowledge of reasons why gifted learners struggle with writing and the first next right steps to reconnecting your support and partnership with your child.

This is a family event, parents/caregivers are encouraged to bring their student(s). This is not a drop off event - parents/caregivers must attend.

Tina Van Erp, M.Ed is a Gifted Learner Coach, Learning Specialist and Teacher Trainer with 25 years of experience working with gifted learners and their families. As The River® Coach, she empowers gifted learners through knowledge of themselves as a learner, a positive relationship with learning and developing a personal style of self-advocacy.
