Making the Most of Universal Screening & Acceleration
in a Continuum of Services Workshop - January 13, 2020
REGISTRATION CLOSES ON JAN 3, 2020 REGISTRATION EXTENDED TO JAN. 6
Description: Universal screening has emerged as a valuable practice for increasing representation of culturally and economically diverse students in gifted and talented education programs and other advanced learning options. Despite the benefits of universal screening, however, some schools see potential obstacles such as testing cost, staff time for implementation, and stakeholder concerns about testing in general.
This workshop will briefly introduce seminal research on universal screening, highlight benefits and potential pitfalls of universal screening, and share promising real world models of implementation. Topics discussed include potential uses and limitations of existing school-wide assessments in gifted education, differentiating assessment to capture valid information about diverse learners, and choosing appropriate norms. The workshop will also explore maximizing the value of universal screening by using data to inform program design and reform and to support differentiated learning for all students -- including students screened but ultimately not identified for a gifted education program.
