The economy and culture of the 21st century have a tremendous need for talent. Whether one works in manufacturing, government, education, or the service industry, there is always a shortage of talented people. A major cause of this shortage is the excellence gap – the achievement gap at the high end of student learning. Evidence suggests excellence gaps are growing, yet research has also identified highly promising strategies for reversing this trend. In this session, we will briefly review excellence gaps and their causes, followed by a detailed discussion of potential solutions and advice for parents. Dr. Plucker will also engage in a dialogue with the participants about other relevant and timely topics in gifted education and parenting.
Jonathan Plucker is the Julian C. Stanley Professor of Talent Development at Johns Hopkins University, where he works at the Center for Talented Youth and School of Education. He received his Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Virginia. His research examines creativity, talent development, and education policy, and his books include Creativity and Innovation, Excellence Gaps in Education with Scott Peters and Creativity and Innovation. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award and E. Paul Torrance Creativity Award from the National Association for Gifted Children. He is the president of the National Association of Gifted Children

Financial assistance is available from the Betty Johnson Scholarship Fund: Families with gifted and talented children should not be restricted in their participation in MCGT activities because of limited funds. Therefore, the MCGT Board will accept requests for financial assistance which would enable families to attend events sponsored by MCGT, such as the annual conference or mini-conferences. MCGT also accepts requests for financial assistance for MCGT membership fees.
