This 3-part series provides a high-level exploration of the gifted child with ADHD.  From twice exceptional (2e) experts in neuropsychology, education, and psychiatry, we will examine the complexities of the diagnosis and comprehensive interventions. Educators and mental health professionals will develop a deeper understanding and expand strategies to support this 2e population.

Presenter: Dr. Liz Adams

 

Dr. Liz Adams, owner of MN Neuropsychology, will explore the diagnostic process for distinguishing ADHD, giftedness and the 2e experience of being gifted and ADHD.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the differential diagnosis of ADHD and giftedness.
  • Recognize how intensities present similarly and differentially between ADHD and Gifted 
  • Know the tools of assessment that are core to diagnosis and differentiation between gifted only, ADHD, and ADHD/2e
  • Understand the current developments in the neuropsychology of ADHD

Presenter: Dr. Ana Bartz

 

Dr. Ana Bartz DNP APRN FNP-C, Family Nurse Practitioner at Psychological Consultation Specialists, will outline her process for medication interventions and other treatment considerations for 2e individuals. 

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Consider the treatment and Interventions from a biological, educational, family, and psychological perspective
  • Improve knowledge of medication interventions for 2e children with ADHD

 

Friday, April 26, 2024; 12:00pm – 2:00pm CDT
Presenter: Dr. Matt Fugate

 

Dr. Matt Fugate, Provost of Bridges School of Cognitive Diversity, will present best practices in educational interventions and accommodations for “ADHG  - Attention Divergent Hyperactive Gifted” learners.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the differences in development of executive functioning and how gifted might develop skills differently
  • Learn about the concept of “ADHG” and how educators and practitioners can use this concept in their work with 2e students
  • Develop a set of tools that educators and community mental health providers can both use to work together for best support of gifted and ADHD students 


This series has been specifically designed for mental health professionals working with gifted and twice exceptional people. We welcome participation from GT Coordinators.


All sessions will be via Zoom and recorded for access outside of the scheduled presentation time. 


Continuing Education hours (CEUs) have been approved by the MN Board of Psychology (log #202401.230) and are available from Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). CEU documentation will be sent directly to participants. 


Presenters:

Liz Adams, Ph.D. is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist, and owner of Minnesota Neuropsychology. She has been practicing neuropsychology for 16 years, and she is passionate about finding new ways to think creatively about ADHD and other aspects of neurodiversity. Prior to founding Minnesota Neuropsychology, Dr. Adams practiced as a neuropsychologist for 12 years at the Minnesota Epilepsy Group, where she specialized in providing cognitive assessments for children and adolescents with seizure disorders.

Ana Bartz DNP APRN FNP-C is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. At Psychology Consultation Specialists she manages emotional and behavioral health concerns through a holistic approach using evidence-based practices and a strong commitment to educate patients and families.  She also teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College as an Adjunct Assistant Professor and chairs their Nursing Leadership Council.

C. Matthew Fugate, Ph. D., is Provost and Chief Academic Officer at The Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education. He received his doctorate in Gifted, Creative, and Talented Studies from Purdue University. His primary area of research has focused on students who are gifted with ADHD, including an examination of the relationship between working memory and levels of creative thinking in gifted students with ADHD. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, and books related to his work.
